Guess what kids, we’re going to Walt Disney World!

27 Apr

In just 11 days our family will be heading down to Florida for a magical vacation at the Walt Disney World Resort. As many of you are aware, I have been invited to the 2013 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. For over a month my wife and I have kept this a secret from our kids. This weekend, we finally shared our big surprise with the kids.

Before we shared the big news, my wife had the brilliant idea to make a countdown chain with our boys. She started cutting strips of paper and told Robert to decorate it with Disney drawings. Earlier in the day he had been pretending we were packing for a trip to Disney World, putting his Disney toys and stuffed animals in various backpacks and bags. Robert began drawing his favorite parts of Walt Disney World on the strips as William put his mark on them as well.

Once the coloring and decorating was finished, my wife assembled the chain and we hung it up in our living room. As you can see from the video, Robert figures out the announcement after about a minute and a half. Nonetheless, we had a lot of fun surprising them like this. It was our first time keeping an upcoming trip to Walt Disney World a secret, which made it all the more exciting for us. :-D

What’s in a name?

19 Jan

I’ve been meaning to write a post about our children’s namesakes and decided that a Saturday morning is the perfect time to do just that. Since some of you have asked if we’ve named our kids after certain Disney characters (After all, we are big Pirates fans and we do have a William [Turner] and an Elisabeth [Swann]), here is a breakdown…..

Our oldest child: Robert Douglas Aycock IV

Before Jen and I were married, we discussed possible baby names. We both appreciated passing on family names and agreed we would do so when we got married and started to have children. Being the firstborn son, Robert, was named after me and I after my father and grandfather.

Our middle child: William Fountain Aycock

William

William’s bedhead is awesome.

William is named after Jen’s dad, who is William Fountain VI. Grandpa Fountain (as our kids call him) was named after his father, however, he was not able to pass on the William Fountain lineage, as he had two daughters. Jen wanted to honor her father, as well as her Grandpa Fountain (William Fountain V) by naming our second son after them.

And finally, our youngest: Elisabeth Bennet Aycock

Jen’s middle name was Elizabeth (with a Z), a family name that goes back to Germany on her paternal grandmother’s side. Jen’s great aunt Beth was originally named Elisabeth (with an S) after her mother. When her family moved from Germany to the United States, her name was instantly “Americanized” and the S was replaced with a Z. Jen owns a locket that belonged to her great grandmother with Elisabeth engraved on it.

Bennet comes from my maternal grandmother, whose middle name was Bennett (with two Ts). Elizabeth Bennet also happens to be the name of a literary character Jen and I both like from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. When Jen and I were deciding how we wanted to spell Elisabeth’s middle name, we asked Robert and he said he liked two Ns and one T. We thought it would be a special story and connection for him and Elisabeth if he had a say in naming her.

There you have it. The stories behind our children’s namesakes. :)

Our little princess is three weeks old today.  It’s amazing how quickly the time goes by and how much she has changed already.  What a blessing you are, Elisabeth!

Beautiful Prayers

16 Nov

Each night, we take turns saying prayers with our oldest son.

After I finished saying prayers with Robert tonight, I paused for him to say his own prayers.  A few seconds later he said, “oh, sorry Daddy.  Those were beautiful prayers and I fell asleep for a few minutes.”  I chuckled to myself and then he told me, “my prayers will be short because I am a little bit tired.”

These are the moments I love. :)
